Dead of Winter invites you to experience the Andrew Balfour conducted Polyphony Meets Prairies, a unique contribution to the Winnipeg Baroque Festival. This concert, held at St. John’s College Chapel (U of M), on Sunday, April 6th, with performances at 3:00 PM and 7:30 PM, offers a reimagining of historical musical traditions. Polyphony Meets Prairies blends early European Baroque music, featuring composers such as Purcell, Von Bingen, Lobo, Cardoso, Zumaya, Gonzales, and Gibbons, with South and North American Indigenous musical interpretations.
The performance follows the journey of Chepi, a young Cree girl, guided by the Trickster, as she witnesses an alternative historical narrative. This narrative is presented through a combination of musical performance and storytelling, featuring Emily Eng on viola, actor/performer, Cheri Maracle, and elder, narrator, and Songkeeper Joseph Naytowhow. The concert incorporates Andrew Balfour’s oratorio, WaaWaa Steewak (Northern Lights), and aims to weave together stories from diverse cultural and historical perspectives.
“Dead of Winter is committed to fostering a sense of community by celebrating music from the past and presenting it in engaging and innovative ways, says Andrew Balfour. The Winnipeg Baroque Festival seeks to showcase and collaborate with groups and musicians from across Manitoba and beyond, providing access to significant works in the musical canon for the entire community.”
